Renting in Tasmania: Hobart, Launceston and the Regional Market
Tasmania's rental market has tightened considerably since the mid-2010s as the island's profile rose internationally and interstate migration increased substantially. Hobart's inner suburbs of Battery Point, South Hobart, West Hobart and Sandy Bay command the highest rents, with North Hobart's restaurant strip also popular with young professionals. More affordable options in greater Hobart include Glenorchy, Moonah, Rokeby and Clarence areas on the eastern shore. Launceston, Tasmania's second city about 200 kilometres north of Hobart, has its own rental market at lower price points, with West Launceston, Newnham and Prospect popular. Regional towns including Devonport and Burnie on the northwest coast offer the most affordable rents in Tasmania. The island's social housing waitlist is long; private rental is the primary market for most new arrivals. Check live listings for current figures, as the market has moved significantly in recent years.
