Cycling in Tasmania: Rail Trails, Mountain Biking and Touring Routes

Tasmania has developed a world-class cycling offering in recent years, anchored by the Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails in the northeast, which have attracted international recognition for their technical singletracks through temperate rainforest. The Blue Derby trail system has accommodation and hire available at Derby and is accessible from Launceston (approximately two hours). The Lilydale to Golconda Rail Trail in the north follows a former railway through rolling farmland. The Derwent Valley Trail south of Hobart follows the river valley and is more accessible for families. The Bay of Fires Cycle Tour is one of the great touring routes in Australia, passing through pristine coastal wilderness. Road cycling around the Huon Valley south of Hobart and the Tamar Valley north of Launceston provide outstanding scenery with manageable traffic. Hire bikes are available in Hobart and Launceston. Cycling Tasmania publishes comprehensive trail and touring information.
